In its Sunday, June 25 edition, The Boston Globe featured a lengthy article about Lewiston-Auburn and its many cultural and artistic gems, deeming the community “feisty, funky, creative.
The article, written by freelance writer Judith Gaines and graced with a headline that reads “Changes afoot in a hipper L-A, focused on some of the many entertainment and cultural attractions that are becoming plentiful in L-A.
“L/A has a first-rate art museum, world-class dance, interesting music and theater, good restaurants, and a popular balloon festival,â€? declared the article. “It has Saints Peter and Paul Church, Maine’s only basilica, with towering granite spires and a beautiful rose window modeled after the cathedral at Chartres, France. It also is the home of Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary, the largest of its kind north of Boston.â€?
The article goes on to mention L-A’s Somali influx and its accompanying wave of culture as witnessed by the opening of Cleopatra’s, a new Middle Eastern eatery on Lisbon Street. Gaines also focused a fair amount of attention on Bates College’s cultural amenities, and went on to praise the Riverwalk and the many local arts organizations.
The Globe also used a fair amount of ink describing the new Museum L-A and quoting local lawyer and art critic Phil Isaacson, who mused about the area’s newfound appreciation for native son Marsden Hartley. The late artist and master painter was recently honored by the Lewiston Public Library’s inauguration of the Marsden Hartley Cultural Center.
