A study conducted by KPMG International ranks the cost of doing business in Lewiston-Auburn nearly two percentage points below the U.S. benchmark, with land costs the fourth lowest of the 86 cities reviewed.
In the study, called “Competitive Alternatives,” Lewiston-Auburn was one of the smallest communities ranked, and was compared alongside cities such as Boston, Chicago, Houston, and Montreal.
According to a report in the Lewiston Sun Journal, the fact that Lewiston-Auburn was even included among the cities analyzed is significant. The Lewiston-Auburn community paid no sponsorship fee of any kind to be considered in the research.
Lewiston-Auburn scored 98.2 compared to the relative cost position of the U.S., which was 100. The Journal reported that Stuart McKay, who authored the report based on ten months’ research, said high-tech and related companies are looking at smaller communities like Lewiston-Auburn “as they seek to avoid big-city costs.”
